Kinship of destiny between Ophelia and Virginia/Les destins parallèles d'Ophélie et de Virginie

Ophelia, in Shakespeare's Hamlet, was estranged by her lover and ended up drowned of her own sad will. Virginia, in Bernardin de Saint Pierre's Paul and Virginia, also drowned. Fact is she wouldn't undress out of modesty and couldn't swim to the shore during a terrible storm. Moreover, Paul, far from despising Virginia, died shortly after her interment. Painter Sir John Everett Millais was one of many to represent the tragic end of Ophelia. I love disturbing his beautiful painting with my interpretation of Virginia's death : the Wicked Witch is never far when one shows the death of a pure heroïn... Does Virtue always prevails, even in Death?

Ophélia, dans le Hamlet de Shakespeare, était dédaignée par son amant et finissait par se noyer de sa propre triste volonté. Virginie, dans le Paul et Virginie de Bernarndin de Saint Pierre, se noyait aussi. En réalité, elle refusa de se déshabiller et ne put nager jusqu'à la rive durant la terrible tempête. De plus, Paul, loin de mépriser Virginie, mourut peu de temps après son enterrement. Le peintre Sir John Everett Millais fut l'un de ceux qui représentèrent la fin tragique d'Ophélia. J'adore déranger cette sublime peinture avec ma propre interprétation de la mort de Virginie :  la Méchante Sorcière n'est jamais bien loin quand on représente la mort d'une pure héroïne... Mais la Vertu triomphe-t-elle toujours, même dans la mort?

Here is the final photograph of Virginia, as selected by Rétine. This 2 meters by 60 cm black and white film photograph on Dibon, white framed with many Little People watching it, is a most impressive piece, clearly standing out of the rest of the series (see below). So goes the Triumph of Vertue over bad karma, for this autobiographical series!!

Voici la photographie finale retenue par Rétine. Cette photo de 2 mètres par 60 cm, noir et blanc, argentique sur Dibon, encadrée de blanc et entourée de Petites Personnes est assez impressionnante et se détache clairement des autres photos de la série (voir ci-dessous). Il en va du Triomphe de la Vertu sur un mauvais Karma pour cette série autobiographique!!

Is Virginie dead, or is she?

Around Paul & Virginie/Autour de Paul et Virginie

Paul and Virginia was written in 1787 and published in 1788, a year prior to the french revolution. Bernardin de saint Pierre read it in Madame Necker's salon, where it was poorly received. It turned out to be a major succes in France, England and the USA for a half century... not to speak of the rest of the world. A few years later, the Revolution turned sour with the regime of la Terreur. That's when heads were chopped. At that time, an English woman was stranded in Paris. Her name was Helena Maria Williams, she was an abolitionist and a very knowlageable observer of the Revolution. In order to occupy her time in dangerous Paris, she decided to translate Paul and Virginia. Her translation is not only beautiful 18th century English, it is also a reflection on what is fiction for the French versus the English. And an amazingly personal writing, for she interspersed the main text with some sonnets of her own ;-) For those interested, I found it here, where you can read this admirable translation online.

Paul et Virginie fut écrit en 1787 et publié en 1788, un an avant la Révolution française. Quand Bernardin de Saint Pierre le lit dans le salon de Madame Necker, il fut accueilli avec mépris. Dès sa publication, le livre devint un succès littéraire non démenti pendant 100 ans, aussi bien en France qu'en Angleterre et aux USA -et ailleurs ! Quelques années plus tard, sous la Terreur, une Anglaise abolitionniste passionnée, Helena Maria Williams, se trouva coincée dans le dangereux Paris de l'époque. Afin d'occuper son temps sans se faire couper la tête, elle s'attela à traduire Paul et Virginie dans sa langue. Sa traduction est non seulement rédigée dans un Anglais magnifique, mais en plus, elle contient une appréciation toute personnelle sur les différences entre les fictions anglaises et françaises, une observation à mon avis valable jusqu'à aujourd'hui. de plus, elle glisse dans le texte sa propre poésie, ce qui serait inconcevable aujourd'hui, mais tellement émouvant à lire... Series#2 on the go! La Série n°2 est en route!

 Reinterpreting the boxes and telling a personal story over Paul & Virginie took me several months. The result will be exhibited next September, I'll tell you more later. But you can have a look at it beforehand. I framed the photos so that one of the Little People is standing on the frame and watching the pic. Like Russian dolls, if you wish. Enjoy... Réinterpréter les boîtes et en même temps raconter une histoire personnelle au-delà de celle de Paul & Virginie m'a pris plusieurs mois. Le résultat sera exposé en Septembre, je vous en dirai plus dans quelque temps. Mais en attendant, vous pouvez y jeter un coup d'oeil.  J'ai encadré les photos de telle manière qu'une Petite Personne se tient sur l'encadrement et regarde la scène. Une sorte de mise en abyme, si l'on veut. Enjoy!

1-Spare space was scarce. Clara had to walk on a tight rope and go through narrow doors ; everybody was watching her in awe. Were they expecting her to fall ?

2-Clara got the attention of one person who was both good and bad. Sometimes so bad it was frightening and soul shattering.

3-When adolescence broke out, so did the dreams and fantasies. Since there were no boundaries, she was bound to transgress in blind bondage.

4-Choosing her destiny wasn’t an option for Clara. She was absent minded from her life, someone else occupying the stage.

5- The art of choosing a good man wasn’t in her scope.

6-All that was left for Clara were the waves of desire, up and down, up and dow, here and there, searching everywhere, flesh flashing its flaws where the soul was nowhere to be found.

On the agenda...

Working on the photographs from the Paul & Virginia Project is on its way to completion : the photos are going to be framed or more precisely boxed, so they will be reminiscent of the original boxes. Moreover, they'll be "watched" by some little people, a recurring idea in my work : we, as children, were dragged by adults through tons of corridors and odd spaces that seemed extremely weird to us, even frightening at times. The people watching my pieces of art are on the same scale. Are they frightened? Ill at ease? I have no clue !
Le travail sur les photographies issues du Projet Paul & Virginie est en voie d'achèvement: les photos vont être encadrées de façon à rappeler la thématique des boîtes. De plus, elles seront "regardées" par des petites personnes. Une idée récurrente dans ma production : en tant qu'enfant, nous étions traînés par les adultes dans des tonnes de couloirs et d'espaces qui nous semblaient étranges, voire effrayant. Les petites personnes qui regardent mes oeuvres sont à cette échelle. Ont-elles peur? Sont-elles mal à l'aise? Je n'en ai aucune idée!!

Paul and Virginia was written in 1787 and published in 1788, a year before the French Revolution. When Bernardin de Saint Pierre read it in the Salon of Madame Necker, it was considered a flop. But as soon as it got published, it became a hit in France for the next 150 Years (!) A case very similar to what happened to C.S Lewis when he read his first Narnia book at the Eagle and Child (a pub in Oxford where writers met once a week), and was not appreciated by his friends, among them dear Tolkien ;-)

"How do you know in advance a perfume is going to be a hit?"  asked once a friend of mine to a perfume-maker.  " Very simple : everything works in harmony. People tune up to each other and small miracles happen" was his answer. Well, this is exactly what occured with the Paul and Virginia project right from the beginning. From finding the book in a corrugated paper crate, to its latest extension, writing an IPad book. Here are a few people that helped me create, manage, launch and carry the project. I thank them... so much! "Comment savez-vous à l'avance qu'un parfum va marcher? " demanda un jour un de mes amis à un créateur de parfums. "C'est simple, tout s'harmonise autour du projet. Les gens sont sur la même longueur d'onde et on assiste à des petits miracles." fut la réponse. Eh bien, c'est exactement ce qui s'est passé avec Paul et Virginie, dès le début. De la trouvaille du livre dans une caisse en carton à la dernière idée en date : créer un livre Ipad. Voici quelques uns de ceux qui m'ont aidé à créer, mener à bien, lancer et vivre le projet. Je les remercie... tellement !

Strange things happened in The Bubble/ Il s'est passé d'étranges choses dans la bulle

Ce qui se passe dans la bulle est tout bonnement incroyable. Les gens se comportent de manière étrange. Est-ce l'air pur? Est-ce la présence mystérieuse de Virginie?
What's happening in the bubble is really incredible. People behave strangely.  Because of pure air? Because of Virginia's mysterious presence?

Some thought they were on the Moon/ Pour certain, c'était comme s'ils étaient sur la Lune

Some others felt like playing kid's games/ Certains autres jouaient à des jeux d'enfant

One started to meditate/ L'une commença à méditer

Soon enough, two others joined and started a conversation/ Bientôt elle fut rejointe et une conversation s'engagea

Well, this is life in the bubble, I guess ! Eh bien, j'imagine que c'est ainsi que se passe la vie dans la bulle... Thanks again to Xavier and his team at Zonair3D...

Pierre Cornette de Saint Cyr gets into the bubble/dans la bulle!

It so happened that the famous french auctioneer Pierre Cornette de Saint Cyr visited Mouvart the other day, as he was to perform an auction to the profit of this Art association. He got led through the exhibition and came to experiment my intallation. Il se trouve que le célèbre commissaire priseur français PCSC a visité Mouvart l'autre jour, puisqu'il officiait dans la vente aux enchères au profit de cette association artistique. On le conduisit à travers l'exposition et il expérimenta mon installation.
